In some areas of the US, fire extinguisher recycling is a good option. Although you can’t place an extinguisher in a regular household recycle bin, you can take it to a fire extinguisher service company or recycling facility. Check your local fire extinguisher company listings or earth911.com to find a recycling facility near you.

If recycling isn’t a possibility, it is also acceptable to empty the extinguisher and discard it in your regular household trash. Empty the contents of the canister outdoors into a heavy-duty trash bag, and do not discard the extinguisher in the trash until it is completely empty.

Under the City’s burning ordinance, the following acts are prohibited within city limits:

  • Burning of leaves, trash, garbage, wood, grass, or other rubbish
  • Burning on public streets, courts, alleys, or any private premises
  • Use of outdoor incinerators, burn barrels, drums, or fireplaces for burning prohibited materials

These restrictions apply year-round and are enforced by the Lake Geneva Fire Department and city officials.
